Saylavy Travels to Kenya with DCFC
Sara Gration of Saylavy Limited embarked, on a voluntary trip to Kenya with Derby County Community Trust in May 2015 along with 45 other volunteers including her close friend Antony Stevenson director of Codemakers. The trip which cost £2,350 was funded by a range of events including standing in the cold outside the iPro stadium with a bucket at a couple of football matches, a fundraising BBQ held at Bean Cafe, raffles which included prizes donated by DCFC and sponsorship from local businesses in Derby.
The main sponsors were Justin Smith Architects, Latham Architects, Professional Consultant Certificates & Greendog Media. The sponsors all contributed massively enabling Sara to go on this humanitarian mission – their logos were on the t-shirts worn by Sara during her fundraising activities and whilst in Kenya for the two week period.
Whilst in Kenya the 45 volunteers travelling with DCCT attended three projects in the suburbs of Nakuru and carried out improvements to the school buildings, toilets, perimeter fences, classrooms and kitchen areas as well as partaking in the classrooms and enjoying playing and interacting with the children.
A huge part of the trip was the donations that the volunteers collected and had shipped over – the volunteers gave the donations out throughout the two weeks which provided children and adults with much needed clothes, shoes and toiletries. This was probably one of the most emotionally difficult parts of the trip, seeing the gratitude and smiles a pair of second hand shoes can produce.
The trip was a huge success and the amount achieved was exceptional which has ensured that the trip with Derby County will go ahead again in 2016 which will make it the 5th year for Derby County to Kenya!
Sara has described the experience as the most rewarding and worthwhile charitable experience she has done and will be returning to Kenya next year to continue the good work. She has made new friendships and experienced something that is life changing for both the people in Kenya and for herself.
